Founded in 1979 the Club was originally known as The Thanet & Wantsum Relic Association.

Who are we?

We are a small group of metal detecting enthusiasts with a maximum membership of 25.

What are our aims?

We participate in the hobby of metal detecting, promote responsibility in the hobby and contribute to the expansion of our knowledge of local history.

Where are we based?

Most of our members live in the Thanet area and we meet at the British Legion Club, St Johns Rd. Margate, at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month.

Where and when do we detect?

As the bulk of our sites are farmland, we are dependant upon availability between crops. However we endeavour to arrange a site visit at least every other Sunday on areas of land in East Kent where the club has permission to detect.

With whom is the Club associated?

The Club is part of the National Council for Metal Detecting and participates in the Portable Antiquities Scheme. We are also registered with KAMSU whereby our members can be called upon to help Archaeologists. The Club also co-operates with individuals and bodies carrying out studies in particular aspects of our history or for publication of important finds.

The Club has had a long association with many Landowners in the Thanet and East Kent Area and our relationship with them is based very much on honesty and trust. We are proud of our long tradition of openness with Landowners.

Our Site Officer is always seeking new areas for the members to search and written Contracts are offered to all Landowners. We normally visit a block of land only once or twice each year.

In the course of our activities, we assist Landowners by removing metallic and other debris found on their land, We also offer a free recovery service, often at very short notice, to all Landowners with whom the Club has a Contract, for finding lost items of agricultural equipment or personal property.

On the occasion of every Club outing, Officers of the Club are always present to ensure that any conditions or wishes of the Landowners are complied with fully and that any land searched is left as we found it. All rubbish is removed from site.  The Club and its Members hold Public Liability Insurance, with terms as agreed with the National Farmers Union.

The Club maintains a full record of all finds made and Landowners are regularly kept informed of routine finds made and general progress. Landowners are often presented with frames of finds unearthed on their land.

All of our members have a deep and abiding feeling for the history of our County and a respect for the countryside in general.

In the (quite rare!) event of any find having a significant commercial value, our Contracts with Landowners clearly set out the interests and rights of both Landowner and finder.  All valuable finds are reported to the Landowner at the very earliest opportunity and, in every case, within 48 hours of discovery.

If you wish to know more about us or are interested in any aspect of our activities, please contact us @ tawmdc@gmail.com.

If you have lost a ring, etc. in your garden and would like our help in finding it. contact us at above.

No promises but we will do our best to find it.

Cost? Cup of tea and a biscuit will suffice.

Note that our detectors normally go no deeper than about 150mm, so  it is extremely unlikely that we would cause any damage whatsoever to any previously unknown Archaeolgical site
